Positive Behavioral Systems: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Safe and Civil Schools
Positive Behavioral Systems is a prevention-focused, data-driven, school-wide system of positive behavior support, based on an RtI three-tiered proactive model. This model teaches requisite behaviors, reinforces and recognizes students who model these behaviors, and puts systems in place to provide interventions and supports to assist students who have challenges in meeting behavioral expectations. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) utilizes this RtI approach at the elementary level while Safe and Civil Schools, which incorporates PBIS is most appropriate for high school students. Schools implementing these strength-based behavioral systems report an increase in attendance and academic performance, as well as a reduction in the proportion and number of behavioral disruptions, resulting in more time on task and increased instructional time. In addition, both teachers and students view school as a more positive and calm environment that is conducive to both teaching and learning and student success.
