What is the WNYRIC?
WNYRIC is an acronym for Western New York Regional Information Center, a regional public education service organization. There are 12 RICs statewide. The WNYRIC serves over one hundred school districts covering 7 counties (Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Greater Southern Tier) in the western region of New York State.
What is a Regional Information Center?
Several years ago, educators in New York State expressed a need for a statewide telecommunications network. It was not cost effective for more than 40 separate BOCES to compete with each other to deliver this service. As a result, 12 BOCES computer centers were selected to serve as the backbone for EdNet NY, the communications network. These locations are called Regional Information Centers (RICs) or Regional Computer Centers (RCCs) and they are an intermediate unit of the NYS Education Department. They work cooperatively with all BOCES and school districts throughout the State to deliver mainframe, mini- and micro-based services.
How the BOCES Regional Information and Computer Centers can help.
As non-profit organizations designed solely to serve the needs of school districts, the centers offer a variety of affordable high quality instructional and administrative services. From designing technology platforms to training personnel, selecting appropriate software programs to providing a high speed telecommunications networks, the centers help districts remain on the cutting edge of technology in education.
The BOCES Regional Information and Computer Centers are staffed by experienced professionals who are familiar with national and state initiatives. They work in collaboration with the NYS Education Department and assist districts in meeting State reporting requirements. The staff also is well-versed in and able to support a variety of technology platforms.
The services and associated hardware and software provided by the centers are eligible for state aid.
