Update on Network Outage
Monday, 06/05/17

Following the last two week’s Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks, the network is now fully restored. As noted previously, the purpose of a DDOS is to halt normal business operations by flooding the system with an excessive amount of information. I would also like to repeat that no data was breached during this attack.

The intermittent outages that occurred during the attack were lessened and ultimately thwarted thanks to the efforts of numerous WNYRIC staff members and our vendors.  Our core security team put technical mechanisms in place to protect us from further service interruption and were also able to identify the source of the attack. As of Friday, the attack ceased and a formal police investigation began. Because it is an open investigation, we cannot comment further except to say that we are fully cooperating with the authorities.

Any network outage, especially during the school day, is an extremely serious matter. At the WNYRIC, we share your feelings of frustration and disappointment. While we hope that no one will want to wish us ill again, we know that hope is not enough. The 2017-18 school year will include additional upgrades to our network security infrastructure. We are stronger from this incident and remain steadfast in our commitment to your cyber security.

Thank you again for your patience and support.
