The Data Security Symposium Provided Schools Valuable Information
Over 150 people from schools all over Western New York and beyond attended the Data Security Symposium held on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at the Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus as well as through video conferencing at several sites.  It was sponsored by the WNYRIC in conjunction with Erie 1 BOCES Labor Relations and Management Services divisions.

We were pleased to have two keynote presentations by the U.S. Department of Education Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). Chief Privacy Officer Kathleen Styles, Director Baron Rodriguez, and Technical Security Advisor Mike Tassey provided demonstrations that included an overview of current threats to security of district electronic student data systems, what districts need to know are the emerging threats, some practical ways to reduce their IT security risks, and the relation to FERPA's “reasonable methods” requirement to protect student data from disclosure.

The day included additional sessions from PTAC as well as WNYRIC service teams and Erie 1 BOCES Labor Relations and Management Services divisions with topics such as:
  • Data sharing under FERPA
  • Security best practices related to student-level longitudinal data systems
  • Data breach response
  • Data security and your WNYRIC services
  • Network security and planning
