Leadership Through Collegiality
Strategies for more effective leadership took center stage at the joint Instructional Development Advisory Board (IDAB) and Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) professional development retreat, held October 20-21 at Holiday Valley Mountain Resort & Conference Center in Ellicottville.

Leadership in today’s schools is as challenging now as it has ever been. Effective leadership requires working collaboratively and collegially with many groups and individuals across different districts and community organizations. Working with others to lead a school or department requires many skills, including understanding the needs of the whole child. Over the course of three days, administrators had the opportunity to learn about a number of current topics in education including the impacts of poverty on childhood development, mindfulness, and understanding the needs of all students in schools and engage in discussions with thirty of their colleagues from across Erie and Niagara Counties.

Speakers included Justin DeMartin, Elizabeth Freas and Kristin Marchiole from Erie 1 BOCES, as well as representatives from several other area education and human services organizations.

The retreat also provided an opportunity to connect with leaders of the State Education Department in Albany via a distance learning connection to get updates on Computer Based Testing (CBT), standards revisions, Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR), and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
