Outstanding Students Honored Across BOCES

This year’s students have accomplished amazing feats, but only eight Erie 1 BOCES students were recognized for standing above the rest. These students were given an award by a member of the BOCES Board of Education in recent ceremonies celebrating the achievements of the outstanding students.

Lorne Carey, a student in the Exceptional Education Program at John F. Kennedy High School, is the recipient of the EXCEL Award. Bill Lutey, Lorne’s teacher, said, “Lorne is a wonderful student who comes to school every day with a smile, ready to work in his classes.” This prestigious award was given to Lorne because of the improvement he has made in the classroom. Lorne has become more independent and able to help other students. He is a great role model for the other students, and in an essay titled “What I Have Learned About Life While in High School,” Lorne shared his advice on high school success with underclassmen. In the essay, Lorne acknowledges that “High school can be a lot of fun but most of the time it is a lot of hard work.” In recognition of Lorne’s achievement, a Board of Education member presented Lorne with a plaque on June 18.
