Distance education at Erie 1 BOCES focuses on the pedagogy, instructional systems, and technologies aimed at delivering quality educational content and learning opportunities across a variety of networks. The services and technology provided through Distance Education can be divided into synchronous and asynchronous access. The synchronous service refers to the use of technology that enables participants to interact in real time. Types of services provided by Erie 1 BOCES include:
- Distance Learning – an online learning solution that enables users to connect via a two-way multipoint interactive video link. Students and teachers can facilitate or participate in online courses, such as AP, electives, and college level courses that are offered at only a few locations. Staff development can also be conducted to involve multiple schools in a district, or bring in an expert voice from the educational community.
- Virtual Fieldtrips & Video Conferencing – a service that provides video conferencing opportunities that extend into the community, including cultural institutions from around the nation. Teachers receive technical support, as well as consultation, design and implementation service to create quality learning opportunities aligned to the standards.
The asynchronous services provide educators with training, support and instructional best practices for integrating a variety of media resources and self-paced, online learning systems. These include
- Virtual Education Providers – through Erie 1 BOCES districts can access virtual K-12 education solutions that provide a variety of custom solutions that meet the needs of students. This e-learning solution enables districts to provide students with opportunities for credit recovery and credit accrual. Through this service, school districts can also acquire or subscribe to online learning solutions that educators can use to supplement and enhance the curriculum, as well as provide students to practice essential skills required to pass SAT, PSAT and ACT entrance exams.
