RSE-TASC Tours of Businesses

Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Support Center (RSE-TASC) Community Employment Specialists Mary Richards, Julia Duerr, and Paul Wekarski conducted a tour of businesses for teachers and other school related staff in the Tonawanda/North Tonawanda area. The August 8th tours were designed to allow school staff to gain a broader understanding of the many career paths available to special needs students after graduation. With the information they gained, the specialists believe teachers are now better equipped to prepare students in making more knowledgeable career choices for themselves.

About the Tours:
The day started with a brief overview of some of the career options available for individuals based on their educational attainment.  During the workshop topics discussed included the basic skills (Soft Skills) students need to succeed at work, as well as what service providers in the region are available to assist individuals to ensure they are career ready.  Afterwards, participants traveled to each of the three locations, for a one-hour tour, to learn about the many career choices within each facility.  Each employer discussed specific skills and trainings that a prospective employee would need, and which career fields were in high demand.  They also emphasized the importance of company policies, employer expectations and safety regulations.

Ultimately, the goal of the tours was to develop relationships between schools and business so they may be willing to open their doors for future student tours, job shadowing, internships, and possible future employment opportunities.

We would like to thank the following businesses: HDM Hydraulics LLC., Bender’s Technical Detailing, and L&S Metals Inc.
