Alumna Works On Center Construction Projects
One Erie 1 BOCES alumna was able to put their training into practice as their company took on projects at multiple BOCES facilities. Paulina Mazurek, who attended the Harkness Career & Technical Center while studying at Maryvale High School, has worked on the construction and renovation efforts as a Project Engineer with Buffalo Construction Consultants.
“If it wasn’t for BOCES, I don’t think I’d be as successful as I am this early in my career,” Mazurek said.
Mazurek graduated from Maryvale High School in 2017 while participating in Harkness’s Building Trades program. Mazurek then continued her education at Alfred State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in construction management.
Mazurek said she loved her work, and that she was excited that her role brought her back to Erie 1 BOCES.
“Every day there’s something new. Every day I learn something new. It’s an adventure,” Mazurek said. “It’s honestly one of the best places to work in my opinion.”
Beyond her return to BOCES facilities, Mazurek said her work also allowed her to work with her high school alma mater.
“It was cool that last summer I was at my home high school and now this past summer I’ve been here at BOCES,” Mazurek said.
Mazurek said she recalled her days in the Building Trades program fondly and gave a special thanks to her former teacher, Chris Burgio.
“He helped me find and establish my confidence in a male-dominated environment and showed me I could do anything they could do,” she said. “He was a great role model and influence, and if wasn’t for him, I would not have been able to be successful in the position I am today.”
