Harkness Baking Students Create Giant Gingerbread House
The Baking & Pastry Arts program at the Harkness Career & Technical Center has been hard at work creating a large-scale gingerbread house as a class project. Once finished, the gingerbread house will be put on display in the front hall of Harkness for the holiday season.
The building trades class made the frame of the roughly 6-foot house out of wood. The junior and senior baking students then worked together to determine how many bricks and shingles would be required, as well as decorate the structure. Beverly Mintz, Harkness math teacher, created a lesson which allowed the students to determine exactly how many of each would be required using geometry and the dimensions of the house.
Once it is done, the plan is for the early childhood education classes to use the gingerbread house as a prop for pictures for preschool students when Santa visits.
