  • Gain understanding of basic skills necessary to perform beauty services involving hair, skin and nails.  Receive comprehensive instruction in the New York State licensing proceduers that prepare students to take the NYS Cosmetology Board Exam.
  • A TABE score of 8.5 in reading and 5.0 in math is required*.
  • A personal interview will be conducted.
  • A valid high school diploma or equivalency is required for students receiving financial aid.
  • A $300 security deposit is required.
Entry level Stylists are paid an hourly wage or commission.  A Placement Specialist is on staff to assist you with resume writing and interview skills.
To register for this class you must first attend a Full Time Program Orientation and Testing Session at the Erie 1 BOCES Workforce Development Center.

Students enrolling for less than 500 hours (transfer hours) do not need to take the admission test, but may be required to attend orientation.
Eligible students that are accepted into the Cosmetology Program must have a high school diploma or HSE to apply for the Title IV Aid program - Pell and Student loans.
STATE BOARD PREPARATION: This program is for you if you have earned previous accredited Cosmetology credit hours.

An Official School Transcript must be submitted if you are using transfer hours. Upon receipt of the transcript the Erie 1 BOCES Instructor will administer a skills assessment test to determine the number of hours needed for successful completion of your pending New York State Board Exam. There is no fee for the skills assessment testing. An appointment for testing can be made in advance by calling 716-821-7353.

Cost: $8,000
  • The cost of the program is $8,000.  A $50 application fee to the NYS Division of Licensing is not included in the cost of tuition.  Financial assistance may be available through Federal Student Aid, ACCES-VR, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, or other sources.  A Financial Aid Specialist is on staff to assist you.  Please visit our website for Gainful Employment Disclosure information.
