Cleveland Hill Student Earns $1,000 NTHS Scholarship

A CleMikayla Kolarzveland Hill High School senior has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS).

Mikayla Kolarz is one of 225 outstanding NTHS members to receive a Jon H. Poteat Scholarship. She is a student in the Zoo Wildlife and Conservation Careers program, one of three New Visions programs at Erie 1 BOCES.

Besides being a member of NTHS, Mikayla is also a member of the Cleveland Hill chapter of the National Honor Society. She plans to attend Niagara County Community College to receive an associate degree in Animal Management and then continue her education at Canisius College for a bachelor’s degree in Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation so she can work as a zookeeper.

As a feature of Erie 1 BOCES’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) division, New Visions programs are one-year courses for honors-level seniors. The programs connect qualified, highly motivated students with mentoring professionals in the workplace and at local colleges/universities. The Zoo Wildlife and Conservation Careers program partners with the Buffalo Zoo to give students the ability to explore a career in the many areas related to wildlife conservation and zoo management.

One other Erie 1 BOCES student also received an NTHS scholarship – Carl Zarcone, a Maryvale High School senior in the Legal Academy program, which is also in the New Visions suite of courses.

NTHS recognizes student achievement in career and technical education. More than 4,350 schools and colleges are affiliated with the society. Since its founding in 1984, it has awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships to remarkable CTE students nationwide. Visit for more information.
