Statement from Instructional Services following Mass Shooting
May 17, 2022
Dear Erie 1 BOCES Community:
It is hard to adequately express our sadness, anger, and despair following the mass shooting at Tops Supermarkets in the City of Buffalo.
Regardless of zip code, this horrific hate crime has impacted all of our students, families, staff, and communities. Our hearts are with the victims’ loved ones; it is evident the victims were beloved members of our community and the impact they had on those around them will not be forgotten.
This senseless act of violence, which was fueled by hate, has no place in our society. It counters all notions of inclusion and freedom that we cherish. As an organization that consistently promotes inclusivity and equity, we condemn and denounce racism.
It is not lost on us that this heartbreaking violence may bring up feelings of confusion, anxiety, fear, and anger. We believe that students deserve to learn in spaces where they feel welcome, safe, and cared for.
Erie 1 BOCES has made a variety of resources available as we prioritize the social-emotional wellness of our staff and students. In the days ahead, our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (I.D.E.A.) Committee will organize efforts to help us heal and show our support for those affected.
Social workers and counselors will continue to be available for anyone who could benefit from extra support.
Together we are committed to celebrating what is both common and different so we can better serve the needs of our community.
Sincerely,
Erie 1 BOCES Leadership Team
