John Sherman Honored for Lifetime of Service to Education and Erie 1 BOCES

For more than five decades, John Sherman has dedicated himself to strengthening public education, advocating for students, and serving his community. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Sherman was recently honored with the Wayne Schlifke Lifetime Achievement Award by the Erie County Association of School Boards (ECASB).

The award recognizes individuals whose lifetime efforts have resulted in outstanding service to both ECASB and local public education. For those who have worked alongside Sherman, the honor is a fitting tribute to a lifetime of leadership and service.

“What stands out most about John isn't just the length of his service, it's the way he has served,” said Edward Cavan, vice president of Erie 1 BOCES Board of Education. “He leads with humility, listens carefully, asks thoughtful questions, and approaches every decision with students at the center.”

Sherman's connection to education spans both the classroom and the boardroom. He began his career as a science teacher in the Clarence Central School District before serving as a biology professor and department chair at Erie Community College. His passion for education continued beyond teaching, leading to a remarkable 55 years of school board service. He has served on the school boards for Tonawanda City School District and Erie 1 BOCES.

Today, Sherman serves as president of the Erie 1 BOCES Board of Education, a role that reflects decades of commitment to the organization and the region's students. During nearly 45 years on the Erie 1 BOCES Board, he has helped guide the growth and evolution of programs and services that support school districts throughout Western New York.

“John represents Erie 1 BOCES with pride wherever he goes,” Cavan continued.

Throughout his tenure, Sherman has been a steadfast advocate for the mission of Erie 1 BOCES and the value of regional collaboration. He has supported key initiatives including the development of the New Visions and Tech Prep Programs, the expansion of the Western New York Regional Information Center (WNYRIC), the growth of Cooperative Service Agreements, and enhancements to instructional programs and services. More recently, he has championed the development of a new Instructional Services campus on Walden Avenue, helping ensure Erie 1 BOCES remains positioned to meet the evolving needs of students and component districts.

Beyond Erie 1 BOCES, Sherman has contributed significantly to ECASB through his work on budget and sales tax committees, presentations at annual conventions, and involvement with the New York State School Boards Association Legislative Network. He has consistently encouraged fellow board members to pursue professional development and remain engaged in educational leadership.

“What distinguishes John is his unwavering commitment to service,” said Michael Capuana, district superintendent and chief executive officer of Erie 1 BOCES. “Whether supporting public schools, mentoring fellow board members, coaching youth sports, volunteering with community organizations, or advocating for students, he has always led with a genuine desire to help others.”

Sherman’s impact can be measured not only by the positions he has held, but by the countless students, educators, and communities that have benefited from his leadership. The Wayne Schlifke Lifetime Achievement Award serves as a well-deserved recognition of a legacy built on dedication, collaboration, and a belief in the transformative power of public education.
