Michael Capuana, Ed.D., Receives UB Equity and Excellence Alumni Award

On Wednesday, March 4, the University at Buffalo (UB) Graduate School of Education honored Michael Capuana, Ed.D., with the Educational Administration Equity and Excellence Alumni Award during the Willower Lecture and Educational Administration Alumni Awards Ceremony. Capuana, district superintendent and chief executive officer of Erie 1 BOCES, was recognized for his sustained commitment to advancing inclusive leadership practices and strengthening educational opportunities for all students.
The event, held on UB’s South Campus, brought together faculty, alumni, students, and educational leaders for an evening of reflection and celebration. Capuana was joined by members of the Erie 1 BOCES Board, colleagues, and family members, whose presence reflected the strong professional and personal partnerships that have supported his journey in educational leadership. The program also featured the keynote address for the Willower Lecture, delivered by George Theoharis, Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert in equity-oriented educational leadership. In his remarks, Theoharis explored the responsibilities of today’s school leaders as they guide and support increasingly diverse school communities.
At Erie 1 BOCES, Capuana has consistently emphasized that Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (IDEA) are not simply initiatives, but guiding principles that shape the organization’s culture and work. His support of the IDEA Committee reflects a shared commitment to creating an environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed, voices are elevated, and equity informs both decision-making and daily practice. The IDEA Committee includes staff from many programs and job roles across Erie 1 BOCES. Together, they work to make sure every person in the organization feels valued and supported. Their work shows how equity can strengthen teamwork, improve learning, and help the organization grow.
