Erie 1 BOCES Workforce Development Recognized by NYSSBA for Culture of Caring Initiative
Erie 1 BOCES Workforce Development has been recognized by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) with a Culture of Caring Award for the outstanding community service demonstrated by Workforce Development students in the Cosmetology and Barbering programs.
The award honors the students' efforts to provide free haircuts to members of the local community throughout December 2025. Through the initiative, students applied the skills they developed in the classroom while making a meaningful impact on individuals and families during the holiday season. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the program was extended for an additional month, allowing more community members to benefit.
"This recognition reflects the dedication of our students and staff to making a difference beyond the classroom, and is a true win-win situation for everyone involved." said Erie 1 BOCES Director of Workforce Development and Educational Partnerships, Christa McHale. "Our Cosmetology and Barbering students gained valuable career skills through hands-on learning experiences in real-world settings, while providing a valuable service to members of our community throughout the holiday season. It's a great example of how workforce development education can benefit both our students and the communities they serve."

Through initiatives like the Free Haircut Program, students continue to demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to service as they prepare for future careers.
