June 2023: Caribbean-American History Month

U.S. National Caribbean American Month is celebrated every June to acknowledge the contributions of Caribbean-Americans and celebrate the rich culture, music and food associated with the Caribbean. National Caribbean American Month started in 2004 and was made official in 2006 with the signing of proclamation by President George W. Bush.

The Caribbean region covers more than 1 million square miles with 7,000 islands and 13 independent states represented. While some of the countries in the Caribbean identify most with Latin culture, each island has their own traditions, music and foods.

Highlighting a few individuals in history

• Alexander Hamilton born in the British Leeward Islands (now St. Kitts and Nevis) he was a Founding Father and served as the first Secretary of the Treasury.
• Roberto Clemente born in Puerto Rico and one of the first Latin American major league baseball stars.
• Jennifer Lopez was born in Puerto Rico and is an actress, singer and dancer.
