New York State (NYS) Retirement System

Erie 1 BOCES employees have the opportunity to enroll in the NYS Retirement System. ERS manages classified employee retirement memberships.  Classified employees include technicians, clerical employees, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other classified (non-certified) staff.

TRS manages certified employee retirement memberships.  Certified employees include teachers, school principals and other supervisory and administrative positions.

Tax Sheltered Annuities

In addition to the NYS Retirement System to save for your retirement, Erie 1 BOCES offers two additional ways to save for the future: 403(b) and 457 plan.

A 403 (b) plan is a U.S. tax-advantaged retirement savings plan available for public education organizations, some non-profit employers.

We also offer a 457 plan. The 457 plan is an IRS-sanctioned, tax-advantaged employee retirement plan.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

E1B cares about their employees!

An EAP is a free benefit offered to help our employees resolve personal or family problems in a confidential manner.

As an employee of Erie 1 BOCES, you are eligible for these services:

  • Up to four free consultation visits per problem incident with a professional counselor.
  • Information and referral to other community resources for specialized or more extensive services.
  • 24-hour telephone access to the program for emergency personal or family crises.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

FSA's allow you to have a certain amount of money deducted from your paycheck, before any taxes are calculated, to pay certain medical and daycare expenses.

Because it's tax-free, the amount you set aside is 30 or 40 percent more (depending on your tax bracket) than you would be able to spend without a flexible benefit plan.

Flexible benefit plans could save you thousands of dollars every year!

Types of Positions

Classified Positions
Civil Service vs. Provisional Hiring

Classified positions are for support staff and candidates can be hired either from having taken a Civil Service Test for that position or they are hired from the General Public "provisionally." These positions are all open for anyone that meets the minimum qualifications as defined on the job posting.

Hiring from a Civil Service List

Clerical and most technical positions are governed by Erie County Civil Service regulations. These positions can be filled from a list of eligible candidates resulting from an examination given for a specific job title. This examination may be a written test, performance test or evaluation of training and experience or some combination of other factors. If a position becomes available and you are an eligible candidate, you will be contacted by the Human Resources Services office.

All Other Qualified candidates

The same positions do not immediately require that a qualified candidate take a Civil Service exam prior to employment. If a candidate meets the minimum qualifications as defined in the on the job posting, they may be interviewed, hired and will sit for an exam at a later time after employment begins. This is called a provisional hire.

Certified Positions

Certified positions are primarily for educators, teachers and administrators. Applications are only accepted if the candidate holds the proper NYS certification or is able to obtain prior to employment starting.

Aide Positions
Teacher Aides
Students who require additional support in school, work with an aide during the school day. No special certifications are required, training is provided.
