World Day of Social Justice is not a public holiday but rather a global observance that has been in effect since 2009, that is observed annually on February 20th. More than one hundred international political leaders held a World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1995, to fight against poverty and full employment and aspired that they would also strive to have stable, and safe societies. Creating equal opportunities for job seekers, allowing equitable distribution of income, and offering greater access to resources via equality and equity became the flagship slogan of world leaders.
The World Day of Social Justice 2024 theme has yet to be announced by the UN, but the theme for 2023 was “overcoming barriers and unleashing opportunities for social justice.” The idea behind the World Day of Social Justice 2023 theme will likely mirror this, and aim to bring people together to open dialogue.
Justice is the concept of fairness, thus Social Justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities. It refers to fairness and equity as it manifests in society. Including areas such as healthcare, employment, housing, and beyond. Overtime, its scope has expanded to encompass all facets of societal life, incorporating considerations of race and gender. When a society is just, everyone is respected, supported, and protected. Achieving social justice isn’t easy as there are many issues that need to be addressed. Social Justice is both a process and a goal. “The goal of Social Justice education is full and equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs.”
