West Seneca, NY – Michael Capuana, Ed.D., has been named as Erie 1 BOCES district superintendent and chief executive officer. His appointment, which will begin on August 1, was unanimously approved by Erie 1 BOCES’ seven-member board of education and the New York State Department of Education.

In the role, Capuana will serve as a field representative to the New York State Commissioner of Education on behalf of the region’s 19 component school districts, along with Buffalo Public Schools. He will also oversee the instructional, managerial and technology services provided by Erie 1 BOCES to school districts in the region.

“Dr.Capuana has a proven track record of successful leadership and collaboration,” said John Sherman, president of Erie 1 BOCES Board of Education. “His interviews impressed the board as well as the selection committees. We’re excited to see how he will move the organization forward.”

Capuana has worked for Erie 1 BOCES since 2009, and most recently served as assistant superintendent of instructional services, where he oversaw the performance of students, staff and administration in the divisions of Career and Technical Education, Exceptional Education and Workforce Development.

Prior to that role, Capuana’s work at Erie 1 BOCES included time as a director for the organization’s Career and Technical Education division, and he also served as a building administrator at Northtowns Academy as well as  Potter Career and Technical Center. Before arriving at Erie 1 BOCES, Capuana worked as an English teacher for Buffalo Public Schools and the Depew Union Free School District.

Capuana received his Bachelor of Arts, Master of English Education, Master of Educational Administration and Doctorate of Educational Administration degrees from the University of Buffalo.

Capuana’s three-year contract provides a total annual salary of $205,000.
