Cheektowaga Senior is Creating Beauty in the World
Myah Gates is a senior from Cheektowaga Central High School and is enrolled in the Cosmetology program at Erie 1 BOCES Potter Career and Technical Education Center.
“I enrolled in BOCES because I wanted to start my career, learning more about hair, skin and nails,” said Myah.
In the fall of 2024, following graduation, she plans on starting schooling for nursing to become a registered nurse.
“I would like to graduate and travel with both my cosmetology and nursing license under my belt,” she said.
Under the instruction of Lisa Vater, Myah has honed her skills in the art and science ofcutting, styling and coloring hair. Cosmetologists are outgoing people with a flair for creativity. They are members of the expanding and ever-changing world of fashion and design.
“Myah is very talented and passionate about her learning,” said Vater. “She is consistent and puts forth effort every day.”
“This program has helped me get a head start in learning the basics of natural hair, color and health,” said Myah. “I am also hoping to graduate with my 1,000 (hour certificate) and become a licensed cosmetologist by 2024!”
As part of public education, Erie 1 BOCES offers a variety of career and technical programs during the regular school day to high school students in Erie County. Highschool students interested in learning more about how they can participate in various programs, such as cosmetology, nursing, emergency services, sports science, web and gaming technologies or aviation technology, should visit www.e1b.org/cte or speak with their high school counselor.
