Potter Students to Auction Modular House
Members of the community will soon have the chance to bid on a modular house created through the hard work and skill of students in the Building Trades program at Erie 1 BOCES’ Potter Career & Technical Education Center.
The 1,378 square-foot ranch will be auctioned from May 23 to June 2 through Cash Auctions, with proceeds supporting the program into the future. The senior capstone project is a highlight of the two-year program, which trains students in the fundamental practical skills needed in the construction field.
“There’s always excitement, especially as the house comes together,” said David Grieco, building trades instructor. “They have the confidence, and they get to see the final product come together.”
Griffin Krencik, a senior from the Frontier Central School District, said he and his classmates were excited to see the progress on the project.
“Everybody’s worked hard to show what they’ve learned, and working together is what makes this less challenging,” he said.
The home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms; three-inch spray foam insulation in all exterior walls; flooring in all bedrooms and bathrooms; first floor laundry; covered front porch; and a full set of stamped architectural prints. The master bath includes a jetted tub, 4' stand-up shower, and double vanity sink.
Matthew Bridges, a senior from the Frontier Central School District, said the project needed everyone involved to work together to overcome challenges.
“You work through what you know to apply it to the problem,” Matthew said. “You have to trust and depend on each other.”
Among the highlights for Grieco is seeing his students take ownership of the project and develop the skills to work together to bring the house to life.
“You remember that this is what 17 year olds can make, and you see how they can succeed,” he said.
When complete, the home will receive a courtesy inspection from the town of West Seneca for rough framing, rough electrical, rough plumbing, and insulation.
