Students from Maryvale Academy recently made a splash in the community by earning second place in the 2024 Erie County Rain Barrel Painting Contest. This annual event, hosted by the Erie County Department of Environment & Planning (ECDEP), invites schools and youth groups from Erie and Niagara counties to transform rain barrels into vibrant educational art pieces, promoting the themes of stormwater pollution prevention and rainwater recycling.

Maryvale’s Environmental Science classes jumped at the opportunity to participate. After studying the harmful effects of water pollution and how stormwater runoff contributes to the degradation of local waterways, students collaborated on a barrel design that both educates and inspires. Their message? Rainwater is a vital resource that benefits all of us.

Once the design was finalized, students brought it to life under the guidance of art teacher Tom Rojek. In his art classes, they primed and painted the rain barrel, uniting science and creativity to produce a visually compelling and meaningful piece.

The entries were judged on how well they fit the environmental theme, creativity, and neatness. Maryvale’s hard work paid off when their beautifully painted barrel earned second place out of a competitive field. The award was presented at the Earth Day Celebration on April 22, hosted by Erie County in collaboration with Omega Mentoring.

The Rain Barrel Painting Contest is more than just a celebration of artistic talent—it’s a hands-on environmental education opportunity. Rain barrels aren’t only decorative; they serve a crucial role in reducing stormwater runoff, which is the number one source of water pollution in our region. By capturing and reusing rainwater, these barrels help prevent chemicals, oils, and debris from flowing into storm drains and ultimately into our lakes and rivers.

Maryvale Academy is proud of its students for their commitment to environmental stewardship and creative expression. Their recognition in the contest highlights the power of education, collaboration, and community engagement in building a more sustainable future.

Congratulations to all the participants—and especially to our talented Maryvale students—for using art to make a difference!
